Almost 830,000 illegal parking cases from January to May in Beijing were fined a total of 166 million yuan.

Some urban policy makers suggest lowering parking fees for residential blocks to encourage residents to park their cars in either underground parking lots, or other designated parking spaces instead of leaving their vehicles on the roadside.

In Beijing's downtown areas and business centers, those who violate parking regulations may face tougher punishments.

The city's transportation authority says they may build more multi-deck parking lots equipped with smart tolls to alleviate street parking. It also plans to set up a parking credit checking system, where drivers' parking activities will be recorded.

The Chinese capital has long been plagued by transport problems, such as a lack of parking space.

Official figures show Beijing has only 3 million parking spaces available for a total of 6.6 million registered vehicles with a gap of 3.6 million.

The municipal government aims to implement new policies aimed at gradually alleviating urban traffic problems by 2020.
