A 13-year-old girl in western China’s Sichuan Province committed suicide after being forced by her grandma to have sex with a fortune teller, according to local media.

The teenager, surnamed Wang, was living in Guang’an city with her grandma as both her parents are migrant workers in other cities. Wang’s grandma, who is superstitious, often takes the frail girl to see a local fortune teller to cure her illness.

In mid-May this year, the fortune teller told Wang’s grandma that Wang’s illness cannot be cured unless she were to have sex with him. Wang’s grandma gave her consent, according to local media.

On May 30, the fortune teller and Wang’s grandma took the girl to a hill near the fortune teller’s home. The grandmother stopped there and let the fortune teller take the girl away into the woods, where the girl was raped by the fortune teller.

The girl fell into a depression afterwards, a local paper said. She wrote four suicide letters and left two recordings from July 6 to 11. She took her own life by jumping off a building on July 12.

Wang’s grandmother and the fortune teller have been detained and are now being investigated, according to a local newspaper.
