A 2-year-old baby was abused by her mother's lover into coma that lasted nearly a year, according to Beijing Morning Post.

The little girl Xinyi (pseudonym) fell into coma on September 19 last year after being beaten by her mother's lover the day before in a hotel in Songxian, Luoyang, Henan Province, according to Xinyi's father Zhang Shaofeng, who said he has to work away from home to support the family.

Zhang said that his wife confessed to him that she and her lover, who is surnamed Zhao, were in a hotel on September 18 last year. The baby would not stop crying, so Zhao tied up the baby's arms and ankles with bath towels and bashed the baby's head to the ground. The baby was then made stand on her head for half an hour.

Zhang's wife told him that it was not the first time that the man had abused the baby, but that she didn't dare to stop him out of fear of being beaten. The baby was still unconscious the next day and sent to the hospital.

After learning about his daughter's condition, Zhang went home and began seeking treatment for the baby. The baby was diagnosed with severe brain damage and treated in a hospital in Henan Province until being discharged this May, because Zhang could no longer afford treatment.

A child's rights protection center in Shanghai learned about the situation and offered to help. The little girl was treated in a hospital in Shanghai in June and gradually regained consciousness. She is now being treated in a convalescence hospital in Beijing.

Despite the treatment, the baby may suffer from cerebral palsy and is unlikely to grow up completely healthy, according to her doctor in Shanghai.

The baby's mother and her lover have been detained and the case is under investigation, according to the newspaper.
