Over one-third of college students have encountered sexual violence or harassment, said a report by China Family Planning Association.

Sex and Reproductive Health Report based on 17,966 questionnaires said 35.1 percent of respondents met with violence or harassment based on their gender.

The most frequent form of sexual harassment was verbal, an experience encountered by 5,427 respondents, followed by forced kissing or touching private body parts for 2,472. Some 1,245 of those surveyed said they were victims of forced indecent exposure.

It said the age of puberty marks the peak of frequency in sexual offences and that 34.8 percent of female and 35.6 percent male respondents said they were victims at that period in life.

Classmates or friends formed 27.6 percent of perpetrators, while boyfriends or girlfriends comprised 26.9 percent, according to the report. Other offenders included strangers, 14.7 percent, and online friends, 11.2 percent. Less than 1 percent said they were targeted by teachers or supervisors.
