Three English-speaking foreigners climbed over turnstiles, were rude to staff, and attempted to illegally take their bikes onto the Shanghai Metro.

Footage of their antics was published on Wednesday by the Metro.

The trio were prevented from boarding the train.

"It's against the rules to ride the Metro with bikes, including foldable ones, and the trio didn't even pay the fares," a rail official said.

The incidents took place at about 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Longhua Road M. Station. After the foreigners climbed over the turnstile gates, they were stopped by a staffer on the platform who asked them to leave.

That request was "rudely rejected" and eventually the trio were persuaded by a passenger not to board the train.

The authorities told Shanghai Daily that people who take bikes on the Metro are usually given warnings, but the three foreigners on Saturday were not fined for fare dodging because they were stopped before getting on the train.

According to the rules, Metro fare dodgers can be fined up to 84 yuan (US$14) for the offense.

The fine equals six times the highest ticket price for a single trip.
