Remarried couples will not be allowed to hold wedding ceremonies in Kailli, an eastern city in Guizhou Province, as the local government recently issued regulations in hope of reducing ceremonial profligacy.

According to the local government, ceremonies and funerals are not allowed to be repeated several times for one occasion and those who choose to marry a second time, or even more, cannot hold ceremonies.

Other than first marriages or funerals, all banquets hosted for the loss of direct lineages, foster parents, spouses or custodians will be outlawed.

Banquets served for weddings or funerals are a popular tradition passed down from the agricultural society which has a great influence on Chinese culture. In many people's view, the success of the ceremony depends on its size and number of participants who arrive presenting gifts of money.

However, in today's society they are considered a breeding ground for binges and corruption.
