Beijing will build seven electric-corridor projects to transmit out-of-town electricity to the city during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020). The electricity from outside will increase from nearly 60 percent of Beijing’s total power by the end of 2015 to around 70 percent by the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period.

Recently, a 500 KV power transmission project from a power plant in Yu County of Hebei Province to Mentougou District in Beijing started laying pipelines. This is the second of all the seven power transmission projects the capital aims to build during the 13th Five Year Plan period. This project will increase Beijing’s power receiving ability by 3 million KW, and out-of-town power will increase by 5 billion KWH annually at the early stage, which is of great significance to meet Beijing’s growing power demand.

As Beijing will no longer build large power plants and its existing fired-powered plants will reduce electricity generation gradually, the city’s demand for out-of-town power will increase in future. Additionally, key national construction projects such as Beijing’s sub-center, the Olympic Winter Games and Beijing-Daxing International Airport will also increase the capital’s power demand.

The accomplishment of all the seven power transmission projects will enable Beijing to receive outside power of 37 million KW, an increase of 118 percent from the 12th Five Year Plan period.
