Beijing will continue replacing the use of coal with clean energy in heating season, as the construction of electricity and natural gas facilities kicks off currently.
This winter will see another 300,000 rural households in 700 villages in the capital city bid farewell to coal-powered heating. By then, there will be a total of 600,000 rural households in the suburbs of Beijing with access to clean heating.
In the winter of 2016, Beijing has supplied 227,000 rural households in 663 villages with clean energy in heating system. In a village in Tongzhou District, the vast majority of households have availed themselves with air-source heat pumps which help cut both costs and emissions.
Replacing coal with clean energy not only benefits people in Beijing suburbs, but has contributed increasingly to air pollution control in the city. In the heating season of 2016, about 760,000 tons of coal consumption was slashed, reducing the emissions of sulfur dioxide by 3,780 tons, PM 10 by over 1,600 tons and PM2.5 by about 1,000 tons.
Additionally, the construction of electricity facilities keeps pressing ahead. This year, 46 power substations with a total investment of 9.7 billion yuan (over US$1.4 billion) will be built and put into operation. Millions of households in Beijing will have access to electric heating, saving 4.232 million tons of coal consumption annually.
