Beijing has begun preparations for test runs of its first medium-to-low speed magnetic levitation (maglev) train on Sept. 15, putting it on schedule to start trial operations by the end of the year.
The trial operations will take place to the west of the city between the Shimenying station and the Jin’anqiao station, a distance of 9.1 kilometers. Dubbed the line S1, the new maglev line could connect with the Pingguoyuan station in late 2019, depending on the renovation work progress of the station.
The test run on line S1 marks the successful application of medium-to-low speed maglev train technology in Beijing. The line will improve traffic conditions on the way in and out of Beijing’s Mentougou District, and it will play a positive role in industrial restructuring in the Shijingshan District.
At 10.2 kilometers in length, line S1 will stop at eight elevated stations. So far, constructions have completed on the main structure of seven stations -- all except for the Pingguoyuan station -- and the elevated tracks between them.
The line will be equipped with six-car-sized maglev trains which are 89.6 meters long, 3 meters wide and 3.7 meters tall. With a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour, the train is designed to carry a maximum of 1,032 passengers at a time. A total of 10 trains will be put into service at a running frequency of every five minutes in the initial stage of operation.
