Beijing tops a list of China’s most innovative cities, according to reports recently issued by the Intellectual Innovations City Lab (IICL).

The IICL recently published two reports about China’s innovation status in 2017, which evaluate the innovation capabilities of all 287 cities at the prefecture level or above and give a detailed ranking and analysis of each city’s innovation index.

According to the reports, China’s top 10 most innovative cities are, in order, Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Tianjin, Wuhan, Hangzhou, Nanjing and Suzhou.

Beijing tops the list with a composite index of 0.587 points. The points are calculated based on the area’s innovation resources, the service support for innovation and the performances of innovative products.

In terms of Beijing’s innovation resources, the capital’s strength in technological development lies with its number of local scientists and available funding– the largest in the country. In addition, Beijing has deepened reform to streamline the administrative process, delegate powers and improve regulation and services, in a bid to further unleash the creative powers of its workforce to build the city into the national center for science innovations.

On evaluating the performance of Beijing’s innovation works and products, the capital ranks first on the number of enterprises listed in the ChiNext market and the New Third Board market, which shows that the small- and medium-sized enterprises here are active in innovation and entrepreneurship.

From 2011 to 2015, over half of Beijing’s science and technology contracts have involved more than 330 other cities in China. The capital plays a vital role in contributing to other areas’ innovation development, which solidifies its role as the national center of science and technology innovations.
