One dead after bus plunges into Yangtze River

One person has died following the collision of a private car and bus which then plunged into the Yangtze River, police said Sunday, adding they have put the driver of the private car under police watch.

The body of one of the bus passengers was retrieved from the river by rescuers. The number of passengers on the bus is not yet known.

According to the local traffic police, the bus and private car crashed into each other, causing the former to break through road fencing and drive off a bridge into the Chongqing section of the Yangtze River, China's longest waterway, at around 10:08 a.m. Sunday in Wanzhou district.

The driver of the private car is under police control and is being treated in hospital.

Rescue work and the investigation into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
