China, India seal border defense pact

China and India signed a border defense agreement Wednesday to maintain peace and stability on the border, confirming practice and experience of border issues in law, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying.

Hua said the agreement which reflects the will and resolution of both sides for a friendly and cooperative relationship is of great significance for friendship and trust between the two sides.

After witnessing the signing of the border agreement with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh, Premier Li Keqiang said at a news conference that they believe "the two countries have more common interests than disagreements".

The two countries have the ability to manage border disputes, Li said.

Singh said the agreement "will add to the existing instruments to ensure peace, stability and predictability on our borders".

Over the past few decades, China-India border negotiations have maintained a sound momentum while the general situation on the border remained peaceful and stable. The two sides have conducted effective control over border disputes and safeguarded the general situation of common development, said Hua.

The Border Defense Cooperation Agreement is built on previous agreements signed in 1993, 1996 and 2005 that recognize the principle of mutual and equal security.

Singh arrived in Beijing on Tuesday night for a three-day visit.

The Indian prime minister will deliver a speech at the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Thursday.
