Abstract

I. China and the West have had a long history of cultural communications.

II. Common ground between both sides is far greater than many believe.

III. In areas of common ground, we should ensure communications are on an equal level.

IV. Dealing with differences is even more important.

1. It was a successful strategy to seek common ground while reserving differences after a communication breakdown was caused by external factors (for example the Cold War).

2. We have to face each other's differences through effective communication.

V. We should appreciate differences while seeking common ground.

1. Through our differences we can overcome our deficiencies by learning from each other's strengths.

2. We can only maintain our cultural diversity if we have differences.

3. The world's diverse cultures can only live in harmony through their differences.
