An ordinary woman in the countryside has built a school for disabled kids. And for fourteen years, this special school has helped change the lives of over 100 students.

At four o'clock every morning, Gao Shuzhen wakes up to prepare breakfast for the kids. Most of them are disabled. Some need help to complete even the most basic tasks.

Gao's son, Wang Liguo, was the school's first student. He's had serious arthritis since he was four-years-old. And the public elementary school refused to enroll him.

Gao said, "I said, 'Let's leave, mom will teach you.'"

But because Gao Shuzhen is illiterate, she needed someone else to teach him. But who? Then she thought of her daughter, who was in high school.

Wang Guoguang said, "My mom asked me to drop out. She said we didn't have that much money. But I knew that she wasn't thinking that way."

An ordinary woman in the countryside has built a school for disabled kids. And for fourteen years, this special school has helped change the lives of over 100 students.

After her daughter left school to teach, word spread to neighboring villages, and more disabled children were sent over to study. One of them is Liu Shuang.

Liu Shuang, student, said, "Mother Gao said, all these kids here are disabled. So room and board and tuition are all free."

With more kids come more needs: Gao needed more classrooms and dorm rooms. But she didn't have the money.

Gao said, "I looked at the moon and cried and cried. I was afraid that my daughter might see me crying and get upset."

But she was determined to follow through. Brick by brick, after four years, her dream has come true.

It's cost her the family's entire savings and left her with over 100,000 yuan in debt, equal to around 16,000 US dollars.

To provide for her family, Gao runs this stall in a nearby market, and goes from door to door selling her goods. At lunch time, this is all she has.

But for over a decade, and with the help of volunteers, Gao Shuzhen has given these kids a chance for a normal life. They say Gao is their mother and this is their home. And that is priceless.
