NANNING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- A court in China on Tuesday sentenced Liu Xingtai, a former senior legislator of Hainan Province, to death with a two-year reprieve for accepting bribes.
Liu, former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Hainan Provincial People's Congress, has been deprived of his political rights for life, his personal property will be confiscated, and his illegal gains from bribery will be recovered and turned over to the state treasury, according to the verdict of the Intermediate People's Court of Guilin City in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The court found that Liu had taken advantage of his positions in Shandong and Hainan provinces between 2003 and 2024 to assist individuals and organizations in matters related to business operations, business contracting and disbursement of funds.
He accepted money and valuables worth more than 316 million yuan (about 44.38 million U.S. dollars) in return, the court said.
Liu stood trial on May 29, pleaded guilty and expressed remorse in his final statement. Enditem
