BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Friday that nothing Lai Ching-te says or does can stop the historical trend of China's eventual and inevitable realization of national reunification.

Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks in response to the erroneous cross-Strait relations rhetoric contained in a speech Lai delivered on the same day.

It is only by adhering to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus that peace and stability can be effectively guaranteed between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, and that a good life can be ensured for Taiwan compatriots, Chen said.

The spokesperson noted that any deviation from the one-China principle or denial of the 1992 Consensus in furtherance of "Taiwan independence" will create tension and turbulence in the Strait, bringing damage to the economy and the people's interests in Taiwan.

In his speech, Lai obstinately adhered to his "Taiwan independence" stance, propagated the so-called mainland threat, and distorted World War II history and UNGA Resolution 2758 in an attempt to push the separatist agenda through violence and external support, Chen said.

However, Lai's false rhetoric and practices cannot alter the historical and legal fact that Taiwan is a part of China, or the international consensus that Taiwan belongs to China, the spokesperson noted.

"We will stand close with our Taiwan compatriots to resolutely oppose separatist activities aimed at 'Taiwan independence' and foreign interference, firmly safeguard the common home of the Chinese nation, and move toward a bright future of national reunification and rejuvenation," Chen said.
