BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- More Taiwan residents have come to realize that the Lai Ching-te authorities' insistence on separatism will only bring war and disaster to the island, said a mainland spokesperson on Wednesday.

Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks at a regular press conference while commenting on recent opinion polls showing that over 60 percent of Taiwan residents are unwilling to see themselves or their family members sent to the battlefield in the event of cross-Strait conflict.

Peace is the shared aspiration of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, while reunification is the only viable path for Taiwan's future, Chen said. He called on Taiwan compatriots to oppose separatist activities, jointly safeguard peace and stability across the Strait, and promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.

Regarding Taiwan media report that public dissatisfaction with Lai's governance has remained above 50 percent for six consecutive months, Chen said the Lai authorities have intensified separatist rhetoric, hindered cross-Strait exchanges, made unprincipled concessions to external forces at Taiwan's expense, and pushed for actions that undermine Taiwan's development and people's wellbeing, adding that these moves run counter to mainstream public opinion on the island.

Responding to claims by Taiwan authorities that the mainland had launched cyberattacks against the island, Chen said the Democratic Progressive Party authorities are making up accusations to deflect attention from their poor governance, adding that it is mainland agencies that have previously uncovered and exposed the cyberattacks carried out by Taiwan-linked organizations.
