HANGZHOU, June 24 (Xinhua) -- The total number of registered sailors in China had exceeded 2.08 million at the end of 2025, ranking among the highest worldwide, the Zhejiang Maritime Safety Administration said on Wednesday.

This figure includes roughly 990,000 seagoing crew members and 1.09 million inland river crew members.

Against the backdrop of accelerated changes in the global shipping landscape and the green and intelligent upgrading of the shipping sector, higher standards and new requirements are imposed on sailors' comprehensive literacy, professional skills and emergency response capabilities.

Maritime authorities have rolled out a series of pragmatic service measures to promote the high-quality development of the sailor workforce, covering deepening management reform, strengthening service and optimizing the career development environment for sailors, said Wang Huayuan, deputy director of the administration.

To mark the 16th Day of the Seafarer which falls on Thursday, the 7th China seafarer skills competition will be held in Zhoushan, east China's Zhejiang Province, from Thursday to next Monday.

The event has attracted 46 teams and 132 individual contestants, bringing the total number of participants to more than 620, while the number of contest items has increased to 18, marking an all-time high in both the scale of participation and the number of events. Enditem
