GUIYANG, June 25 (Xinhua) -- China captured the women's team title at the 13th Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships on Thursday, finishing comfortably ahead of Japan and South Korea on the opening day of women's competition in Zunyi, southwest China's Guizhou Province.
Competing across the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, the host nation totaled 168.498 points to secure the gold medal. Japan finished second with 163.496 points, while South Korea claimed bronze with 156.563.
"I am really happy that all our team members worked together and won the team gold today," China coach Liu Tao said after the competition.
Looking ahead to the remaining events, Liu said the team's priority would be maintaining consistency while gradually increasing difficulty.
"On the basis of ensuring stable execution and the safety of the athletes, we will continue to refine the quality of our routines and progressively aim for higher difficulty scores," he said.
China also dominated the individual all-around competition, which doubled as qualification for the apparatus finals. Ke Qinqin won the gold medal with 56.299 points, while teammate Zhang Qingying took silver on 55.666. Japan's Nishiyama Misa earned bronze with 54.799 points.
One of the day's most celebrated moments came from Uzbekistan's Oksana Chusovitina, the 51-year-old who continues to compete at the highest level. Chusovitina scored 13.099 points on the vault during the team competition, drawing applause from both spectators and fellow athletes as she extended a career that has spanned more than three decades.
