BEIJING, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police arrested 18,000 suspects in connection with 12,000 drug-related criminal cases across the country in the first five months of 2026, the Ministry of Public Security said on Friday, which is the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
A total of 10.7 tonnes of drugs were seized during the period from January to May, the ministry said in a statement.
Police also apprehended 49 drug-related fugitives hiding overseas, including two suspects wanted under Interpol Red Notices and two on the ministry's most wanted list.
Additionally, anti-drug agencies launched special operations targeting crimes involving narcotic and psychotropic substances, intensifying efforts to combat drug-facilitated sexual assault and crimes involving narcotics disguised as e-cigarettes.
During the campaign, police cracked 4,795 criminal cases involving narcotic and psychotropic drugs, arrested 7,724 suspects and confiscated 7.9 tonnes of such substances, the ministry said, adding that the operations had effectively curbed the spread of related crimes.
Authorities also intensified efforts to tackle the abuse of non-scheduled addictive substances such as nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, and butane.
Through strengthened inter-agency coordination and closer integration between administrative and criminal enforcement, police solved 1,234 related cases and identified 54,000 instances of substance abuse, according to the ministry. Enditem
