BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) -- China has released a plan for building a leading sports nation, setting targets to improve public fitness, expand the sports industry and strengthen elite athletic performance by 2030.
The blueprint, covering the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), was issued by China's General Administration of Sport.
Under the plan, China aims to increase per capita sports venue space to about four square meters, raise the proportion of residents who exercise regularly to around 40 percent, and boost the share of the population with a good level of physical fitness to 31.1 percent.
The plan also calls for China to remain among the world's leading nations in the number of world titles won, while expanding the sports industry's total value to more than seven trillion yuan (1.03 trillion U.S. dollars).
By the end of 2025, China's per capita sports venue area reached 3.11 square meters, while 38.52 percent of Chinese residents aged seven and above reported exercising regularly.
According to official figures released in 2025, the rate of the population with a good level of physical fitness was 30.9 percent. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), Chinese athletes have won 665 major titles (in Olympic Games, World Championships and World Cups). The total output of China's sports industry reached 3.8421 trillion yuan in 2024.
The plan identifies 38 key tasks across areas including national fitness, elite sport, youth sport, sports industry, sports culture and anti-doping efforts.
It is supported by eight complementary initiatives, including the construction of sports venues and facilities, talent development, upgrades to the outdoor sports industry, and advances in sports science and technology. Enditem
