CHENGDU, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Zhang Jianhua, former deputy head of the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday, after being convicted of bribery, according to a court ruling.
The Intermediate People's Court of Dazhou in southwest China's Sichuan Province also fined Zhang 3.8 million yuan (about 560,000 U.S. dollars). All illicit gains and related proceeds will be recovered and turned over to the state treasury, the court said.
The court found that between 2008 and 2025, Zhang took advantage of his positions to seek benefits for others in matters such as administrative approvals and investment deals and, in return, accepted money and valuables worth more than 43.38 million yuan.
From 2021 to 2025, after his retirement, Zhang also used the influence derived from his former positions through the acts of other state functionaries to help others obtain improper benefits in business operations and project contracting. In exchange, he accepted another 11.7 million yuan in bribes, the court ruling noted.
The court ruled that Zhang's conduct constituted the crimes of bribery and accepting bribes by exploiting influence, with the amounts involved deemed "especially huge" under Chinese law.
However, Zhang received a lenient sentence because some of the bribery offenses were attempted rather than completed, he voluntarily surrendered and truthfully confessed to his crimes, disclosed additional bribery facts previously unknown to investigators, pleaded guilty, expressed remorse and actively returned illicit gains, while all illegal proceeds had been recovered.
The case was heard publicly by the court on April 16. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence, while Zhang and his defense counsel cross-examined the evidence and made their arguments. Zhang made a final statement in court, pleading guilty and expressing remorse. Enditem
