TORONTO, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Top seeds Zhang Shuai of China and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic won the women's doubles title at the WTA 1000 event in Toronto on Thursday, beating third-seeded Sara Errani and Nicole Melichar-Martinez 6-3, 6-4 in the final.
The title was Zhang's fourth doubles trophy on tour this year and the 19th of her career. It was also the third title Zhang and Siniakova have won together and their second championship as a pair this year.
They were in control throughout the final, playing steadily and converting their opportunities to finish the tournament without losing a set.
"I feel very happy. I finally realized my wish here in Toronto, winning the championship and getting this beautiful trophy," Zhang said. "Last year I was only two points away from the trophy. This time I finally got the big one."
Zhang and Siniakova have played together only twice this year, but have won both tournaments, having also emerged victorious in Adelaide.
"Although we can say we only team up once every six months, we have very good chemistry," Zhang said. "We played very well and at a very high level, and we were very stable."
The pair went through the Toronto tournament without dropping a set, defeating several strong teams on the way, including Coco Gauff and Caty McNally as well as Sorana Cirstea and Mirra Andreeva.
"We played many strong opponents, including Grand Slam champions, whether in singles, doubles or mixed doubles," Zhang said. "But we played very well, at a very high level, and very consistently. Every match was 2-0."
Zhang credited Siniakova for helping her produce her best tennis throughout the tournament.
"Of course, I have to say that my partner really helped me a lot, and that's how we were able to have such a good performance and result," Zhang said. "I'm really grateful to my partner for playing with me. We are improving every day, and that makes both of us very happy." Enditem
