China Focus: Chinese tech innovations fueling Latin American industrial advancement

BEIJING, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Impressed by their performance and efficiency, a hotel in Panama has placed a new order for Chinese smart service robots to serve as its new "staff members."

The round-the-clock fleet, capable of handling services ranging from food delivery to laundry pick-up, was developed by Beijing Yunji Technology Co., Ltd. They are one of the latest high-tech additions to the Central American country's hospitality sector.

Founded in 2014, the Beijing-based company has deployed products in more than 40,000 hotels and 200 hospitals across the Americas, the Middle East, and other regions worldwide.

"Looking ahead, we aim to deliver essential services to tens of millions of people on a daily basis, while staying committed to building a bridge that connects the digital and physical worlds," said Li Quanyin, CEO of the company.

Yunji Technology is part of a broader wave. In recent years, Chinese high-tech manufacturers have made inroads into the Latin American market, injecting fresh momentum into sectors ranging from transportation to healthcare.

"I was captivated by this BYD bus from the very first drive," said Alexandra, a driver from the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.

An experienced operator of vans and conventional diesel buses, she expressed a clear preference for the high-tech electric vehicles, which feature an air suspension system tailored to local complex road conditions and an air disinfection system integrated into the air conditioning units.

Chinese electric bus manufacturers, notably BYD and Yutong Bus Co., Ltd., have steadily won over local consumers, playing an active role in advancing the region's low-carbon transition.

A number of Latin American nations are advancing their green transition agendas, primarily aimed at reindustrialization via energy transformation, the development of new economic frameworks, and a gradual reduction of reliance on low-value-added exports, said Marcos Cordeiro Pires, a political economist from Brazil.

Beyond the transportation sector, Chinese innovation is helping upgrade regional infrastructure. In Chile, Chinese companies including Huawei are actively engaged in the country's digital infrastructure development, with multiple data centers under construction to deliver artificial intelligence (AI) and big data services, while also contributing to the creation of a regional data hub that extends coverage to neighboring countries.

In Brazil, Chinese tech teams have developed an AI-powered transmission line inspection platform that uses image recognition and big data to navigate the complex rainforest terrain, sharply reducing the safety risks of manual fieldwork.

Inside a 270-square-meter facility in Sao Paulo, Brazil, a range of laboratory instruments from China's MGI Tech has been providing genetic technology support to local researchers and clinical medical professionals, offering advanced technology at more competitive prices.

Since its opening in 2024, the facility has created new possibilities for Latin American researchers to circumvent the high-cost constraints traditionally associated with genomics research in the region.

Latin America has one of the world's most diverse populations, presenting considerable challenges to genomic research, said Zhang Yongwei, general manager of MGI Tech's Latin American branch.

"Biotechnology has evolved in tandem with information technology to become a fundamental enabling technology that sustains economic and social progress while transcending conventional sectoral divides. It is therefore essential that the fruits of science and technology benefit developing nations and their populations," Zhang added.

In the first seven months of 2026, China's exports of mechanical and electrical products saw a year-on-year increase of 21.2 percent. Meanwhile, the country's trade with Latin America grew 15.4 percent year on year, official data showed.

China's remarkable progress in emerging fields such as AI and 5G is providing new opportunities for developing countries to share in technological dividends, said Luciana Acioly da Silva, a senior researcher at the institute for applied economic research of Brazil. Enditem
