WUHAN, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's Chang Bingyu reached the quarterfinals of the World Snooker Wuhan Open on Wednesday with a 5-2 victory over Ali Carter, while seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan also advanced after beating Stephen Maguire.
Chang made a fast start against Carter, compiling breaks of 80 and 73 to take the opening two frames. He maintained control from there to seal a 5-2 victory and become the first player to reach the quarterfinals.
"I feel more confident than before," Chang said, adding that he hoped to become a more complete player. "Hopefully, I can not only rely on my attacking skills, but also improve my defense."
O'Sullivan also booked his place in the last eight with a 5-2 victory over Maguire.
The Englishman raced into a 3-0 lead before Maguire fought back, winning two of the next three frames to cut the deficit to 4-2. O'Sullivan then closed out the match with a century break in the seventh frame.
Despite the victory, O'Sullivan, 50, was candid about his current form and raised the possibility of changing course in his career if he cannot rediscover his best level.
"To be honest, I don't really have much hope to regain the kind of level that I was at before," O'Sullivan said. "I know I can't play that well, but when you have really bad technical issues, if you can fix them, then obviously I'll be much more optimistic about the future."
O'Sullivan said he would give himself about 18 months to rediscover his form, taking him up to the 2028 World Championship.
"I give myself another year and a half to see if I can kind of find something," he said. "If I can't, I always think it's good to draw a line under it and then move on to other things."
Also Wednesday, Judd Trump defeated Si Jiahui 5-1, while Pang Junxu lost to Mark Selby in a marathon match lasting more than four hours and 30 minutes. Enditem
