The death toll rose to seven with 28 injured after a bus and a truck collided early Friday in Wenzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, traffic police said.

The accident occurred at 2:40 a.m. on an expressway in Ruian City when a bus carrying 34 people crashed through the central reservation crash barrier into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a truck, the Zhejiang provincial expressway traffic police said.

Four on the bus and two in the truck died at the scene. A total of 29 injured, five of whom were seriously injured, were taken to hospital, and one died in hospital.

An injured bus passenger surnamed Huang told Xinhua that they boarded the bus in Shanghai on Thursday evening, to travel to Fuzhou, capital of eastern Fujian Province.

"Most of the passengers were asleep when the accident occurred," recalled Huang.

Traffic police are still investigating the cause.
