The shared struggle against adversity is building special relationships. Soldiers and firefighters are at the forefront of danger. But even when they have a moment to spare, they often think of the survivors.

These firefighters have come to this Chengdu hospital to fulfill a promise made a few days ago.

This firefighter comes to this Chengdu hospital to fulfill a promise made a few days ago.

These firefighters have come to this Chengdu hospital to fulfill a promise made a few days ago. They were among the first group of rescuers to arrive in the quake zone. They've received orders to head to other provinces. But first, they hope to see a special mother-to-be.

Yuan Zhiyuan, Firefighter from Shandong Province said "During the rescue process, I kept calling her my sister, and encouraging her. So I think we have a solid friendship. Our troop is leaving, so I want to see her once more."

"What do you want to name your child?"

"A name related to the earthquake, about surviving in the quake."

The woman and her mother were trapped in a collapsed building. Firefighters had to pull them out of a crevice.

It was a complicated, exhausting operation.

Ye Xi, Firefighter from Chengdu said "At that time, we were telling her to hold on. We will help you get out. We will come to see you and your child."

The firefighters kept encouraging them, and more than 20 hours later, the women were freed.

"If you hadn't been talking to me at that time, I would have been overcome."

"To keep talking to the rescuees is one of our practices."

The mother-to-be says she kept telling herself to hold on, and expressed her thanks to the firefighters, whose hard work gave the three of them a chance to live on.
