Their teacher is offering them a lesson on how to face up to reality and place their hope in a better future.

Hai Qingjun, officer of Jinan Military region, said, We contacted the Chengdu Publishing House and they provided us with textbooks and other materials. We hope to accommodate 100 students. Right now, we already have 87, most of them from villages around Longmenshan Township. We pick up those students who live afar and the parents who live nearby drop off their own kids."

Two officers with a master's degree from the military command are offering these children basic lessons on a variety of subjects. Psychological counseling is also on their program.

The officers and soldiers are very considerate toward their young pupils, providing them with lunch everyday.

The officers say they've set up the school so that these children won't lag behind in class work. They say that learning will help these children recover psychologically from the disaster, and with them in school, their parents can also have more time to rebuild their home.
