Officials in Pengzhou say about 13,000 people in the city have returned from resettlement centers to start rebuilding their homes.

Longmenshan Township in Pengzhou is one of the worst-damaged areas. But many of its residents have now returned. They're living in tents supplied by the government.

Ms. Liu and her husband are among the recent returnees. When the quake hit, they didn't bring anything with them. Now she needed someone to help her retrieve something from their collapsed house.

She went to the town officials working in a makeshift office.

Liu Tingkai, party secretary of Longmenshan Township, said, "Over there in the new market. There are some volunteers. They will help you."

Ten minutes later, community workers and volunteers came and removed many things from the rubble for her.

Ms. Liu said her family can now sleep well with these quilts. She added that some soldiers by the bridge have been cooking for them everyday, as well as supplying them with water.

Town officials are also working hard to restore public utilities. At a hydropower station in Baoshan Village, electricity has finally come back on.

A power station worker said, "After 4 days of repair, power was restored for the Baoshan village office last Sunday, and for the resettlement centers on Wednesday."

Workers are busy repairing another power station. They expect to return power to all parts of Longmenshan soon.
