The city of Mianzhu is trying to provide shelter for 660,000 people affected by the earthquake. The city has already erected 60,000 tents for the homeless.

The city of Mianzhu is trying to provide shelter for 660,000 people affected by the earthquake. The city has already erected 60,000 tents for the homeless.

The old avenue in front of the Mianzhu city government building has become the biggest resettlement area in the city. 80,000 people are being sheltered in this area.

One Mianzhu resident said "My family moved here a couple of weeks ago. There are no water or electricity problems and we can also cook and take a bath."

A total of 17 resettlement zones have been set up across 21 townships and villages in Mianzhu. Those receiving assistance are each given a special pass that allows them to receive meals at the canteens that have been set up for them.

One Mianzhu local said "We come here every day for breakfast, lunch and supper. The food is quite ok."

Staff Member of Mianzhu Quake Relief Headquarters said "This canteen needs to prepare meals for about one thousand people every day. And we keep a record of how many food passes we collect."

Water supply facilities were also severely damaged during the earthquake. And PLA soldiers have installed new water pipes to ensure adequate water supply at resettlement shelters.

Construction of 70,000 pre-fabricated houses is expected to be completed by the end of this month. They will serve as temporary homes for another 200,000 people.
