Tenor Carreras warms up Beijing solo

Spanish tenor Jose Carreras promotes his January 18 Beijing concert in the city on Tuesday, January 15, 2008.

Spanish tenor Jose Carreras, one leg of the globally acclaimed Three Tenors, will stage a solo concert for Beijing audiences this Friday.

Carreras arrived in Beijing last week and held a press conference on Tuesday to promote his show that will be held at the National Grand Theater.

He says he still vividly recalls singing in Beijing in 2001. That year, the Three Tenors -- Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, and Placido Domingo -- performed a remarkable concert at the Forbidden City in central Beijing, with a theme to support the city's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.

However, Carreras is alone on his return trip to Beijing. He calls the recent death of his former singing partner Pavarotti a great loss that has brought an end to the unforgettable Three Tenors.

Tickets for the show are being sold for from 380 to 1,580 yuan (US$52 - 217).
