Ms. Zhao and Xiaohu are showing Xiaohu's work.

"There are three kinds of children in this program," Liu explained. "Some are genetically Chinese students, whose parents are all Chinese – we call them the second generation or ABC (America born Chinese); the second kind are also genetically Chinese students who were adopted by American parents; the third kind are non-Chinese children, whose parents want them to learn Chinese as their second language."

The program is running smoothly and has long waiting list of applications. "Xiaohu joined us in the second year, because he had no chance to enter this program in the first year," Ms. Liu said.

Parents show a lot passion and support for this program. They donate books, Chinese lanterns and all kinds of traditional Chinese things to the school to help the children get a better understanding of China.

Deborah Hallam, an art teacher at Glenwood Elementary School, explained that an organization called the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of Glenwood Elementary School provided the funding for the program. Ms. Hallam was the person responsible for submitting a proposal to implement the calligraphy and brush painting program.
