This week, the Beijing Taoist Society made a donation to a local orphanage of 1.3 million yuan, or about 200,000 US dollars.

The money will be used to procure new facilities for the orphanage. The ceremony was held on Wednesday at the Lixian Township Children's Welfare Center, in the southern suburbs of Beijing.

Attending the event were leading figures from the country's religious circles. The donated funds were from the proceeds of a recent fine arts exhibition held in the Hong Kong SAR. The show was titled the "China Taoist Paintings and Calligraphy Exhibition" and displayed more than 12-hundred works. Following its conclusion at the end of last year, more than 200 items were sold in public auctions.
