The modern drama troupe of the China Railway Art Ensemble is preparing for a national tour of its 3-act play "Memory," after debuting it at Beijing's Central Academy of Drama last weekend.

The production, which is being staged to celebrate the 60th anniversary of New China, will tour the country in April, then return for a second run in Beijing at the end of May.

The drama, which is set against the background of Russian culture, recounts the memories of a veteran Russian writer, in particular the three women in his life.

Russian culture and art have a special significance for Chinese people, especially the middle-aged and elderly. Many of them were greatly influenced in their youth by Russian songs, poetry, movies and paintings.

With this in mind, the play's producers have borrowed elements from classic Russian culture, including the movies "The Making of A Hero" and "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears," and other literary works. The blend of different genres has created a visually and artistically compelling drama.

Those involved include playwright Su Lie, director Duan Zesheng and composer Ma Ding. Well-known actor Ma Shihong plays the old Russian writer, with Juanzi in the lead female role, plus support from Yin Li, Miao Fang, Hao Yan and Guo Xiaoqiu.
