Ancient Town Under Protection in Yunnan

Thanks to efficient protection by the local government and people, a 1,300 year-old town in southwest China's Yunnan Province is in good condition, attracting flocks of domestic and overseas visitors.

The Nanzhao Kingdom, which lasted for more than 200 years, was set up in the eighth century. Its capital is now in Weishan County in the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan.

Experts said the town is not only a tourist attraction but also valuable for studying the history and culture of Yunnan during the Tang Dynasty.

So far, the county and local residents have invested over 140 million yuan (US$16.8 million) to protect the ancient town.

According to local cultural officials, the majority of the investment was used to move commercial centers and living quarters to outside areas of the ancient town.

At the same time, the protection efforts also include reconstruction of underground pipelines, installation of drainage facilities and repairs on ancient temples.
