Old Man Releases 12,000 Birds in 18 Years

Gong Zhenfa, 78, a resident in the capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, has released to the nature 12,000 birds including cranes and thrushes over the past 18 years.

To date, he has spent 20,000 yuan (US$170,000) buying the birds. Gong, who begun to buy and release birds in 1983, set a target of releasing 11,111 birds all his life. In order to meet the target, he has been leading a simple life, cutting consumption to a very low level.

He appeals to more people to care and protect birds and the environment as well.
