The main reason the Communist Party of China (CPC) has been so victorious and successful throughout its history is that the Party always puts Marxism to work in practical ways for China, President Jiang Zemin said last week.
Jiang offered this thought as he visited the site of the First CPC National Congress in Shanghai.
As the CPC's 80th birthday approaches on July 1, Jiang wants the leaders and public to reflect on the CPC's experience in that period.
The memorial site should teach the people about the Chinese revolution, patriotism and socialism, said Jiang, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.
The Party held its first national congress at the site on July 23, 1921. It was attended by 13 delegates, including Mao Zedong, who represented 53 CPC members across the country.
In 1952, the site was rebuilt and opened to the public. During Jiang's stay in Shanghai, he also visited the Baosteel Group, the city's afforestation project and a residential area and presided over a workshop on the building of the Party.
To this end of educating the public, a photo exhibition about the CPC opened Wednesday in Beijing's Museum of the Chinese Revolution.
Vice-President Hu Jintao spoke at Wednesday's opening ceremony and noted the changes and great successes of the three generations' of the CPC's leadership from Mao Zedong to Deng Xiaoping and to Jiang Zemin.
Hu said China has entered a new era of development, demanding improved living conditions and modernization. The photo exhibit will remain open until July 20.
