China and Russia signed an agreement this week to set up a joint nature reserve area in the lower reaches of the Wusuli River, which borders the two countries.

Covering an area of 560,000 ha, the new reserve will be established on the basis of two reserves along each side of the river.

The new reserve boasts rich animal and vegetation resources, including 50 species of mammals, 220 bird species, 8 kinds of reptiles, 40 fish species, 500 insect species and 1020 plant species.

According to the agreement, China and Russia will make joint efforts to protect the environment in the areas, conducting regular exchanges of technologies and personnel, and cooperating in scientific research and tourism.
