Mudslide Claims 14 Lives

At least 14 people in Yingjiang County, Yunnan Province, were killed in a mudslide that also destroyed a local hydraulic power station recently. Twenty-seven were injured and four are still missing.

The rescue team was still looking for survivors on Saturday, said Zhang Xinying, director of the power station, who organized the rescue efforts. Zhang said the financial losses were estimated to be 20 million yuan (US$2.42 million).

The landslide occurred at about noon and leveled the power station in which 45 people were working. A funeral was held on Saturday by the local government. A team of experts, led by Sun Wensheng, vice-minister of land and resources, visited Yingjiang from August 17 to18, to investigate the mudslide and also meet the relatives of the victims.
