China's Major Websites More Accessible

China's five "key news websites" opened their mirror sites Thursday in the United States to speed up overseas visitors' access to the five portals and increase viewers.

Mirror sites for China.org.cn, peopledaily.com.cn, xinhua.org, chinadaily.com.cn and cri.com.cn (China Radio International) were set up in Boston in cooperation with the Genuity Inc. of the United States.

According to an agreement signed in July in Beijing, the five portals will rent five servers from Genuity for each as mirror site and another one as audio and video server for joint use.

The mirror sites in Boston for the five are chinaguide.org (207.121.189.113), peopledaily.net (207.121.189.139), chinaxhs.com (207.121.189.115), chinadaily.net (207.121.189.112) and crinews.com (207.121.189.117).

According to an official from china.org.cn, the six servers each own a band width at 100M (100 million bytes per second), and are expected to increase the speed of overseas viewers' access by more than ten times.

This is the first time for China's cyber-news websites to launch joint mirror sites in the United States, the official said. The five news portals provide abundant and authentic news information from China to viewers around the world, he said.

Genuity Inc., formerly GTE Internetworking Incorporated operating business with China for many years, is an e-business network provider delivering managed Internet infrastructure services to enterprises and service providers.

The rapid development of China's Internet industry is providing benefits to U.S. firms, and the current move is a good example, the official said.

With deepened Sino-US relations, bilateral economic and trade cooperation, people in the United States are keen to bolster understanding of China, he said.

An official from the xinhua.org said that as China's Internet news output is being increased when key news websites are improving, overseas viewers can learn more news from China.

The china.org.cn, an information expressway linking China with the outside world, provides information in 10 languages and covers every field about China ranging from government’s policy making to city news and anecdotes. Its voluminous database unfolds an encyclopedia about China before visitors: the country’s 5,000-year civilizations, the pulse of the world’s most populous nation, its market potential and business opportunities, and unique scenic and historical interest.

The Xinhua News Agency is the state's largest wire service, while the People's Daily is China's largest newspaper. The chinadaily.com.cn is one of the country's largest English news provider on China and CRI is one of the world's most influential radio stations, broadcasting each day with 208.5 hours in 43 foreign languages and Chinese dialects.
