Tibetan Language Enriched with Economic, Social Progress

With the social and economic development, a great number of new words and special terms are being introduced to the Tibetan language, an article released Thursday by the Information Office of the State Council says.

Academic departments in Tibet has approved 3,000 new words and special terms in Tibetan language over the past five years and helped unify the ever being enriched Tibetan language, it says.

The Tibet Autonomous Region is organizing a language standard committee, and to appraise and approve the use of 1000 new words and special terms each year, it adds.

A word processing software for the Tibetan language is also in the making.

According to the article, Tibet has also made remarkable progress in regularizing and standardizing written Tibetan language. Since 1993, Tibet began drafting the standards for the information technology of the Tibetan language.

In 1997, the encoded Tibetan language became the first ethnic minority language in China recognized formally by the international standards.

Since 1995, Tibet started working on the General Principles and Methods on the Standardization of Technical Terms of the Tibetan Language.

The Tibetan-Chinese Dictionary of Market Economy and the Tibetan-Chinese Dictionary of Law are also being compiled, the article says.
