Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing on August 6 urged cultural workers to further improve the quality of cultural and artistic works, and promote the development of culture and art.

Meeting with representatives from the cultural sector at Beidaihe, a seaside resort in north China's Hebei Province, Li said that the urgent task for the cultural sector is to implement Chinese President Jiang Zemin’s instructions.

According to Jiang, the Communist Party of China (CPC) always earnestly represents the development requirements of China's advanced social productive forces, the progressive course of China's advanced culture, and the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the Chinese people.

Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said that representing the progressive course of China's advanced culture is part of building a socialist culture with Chinese characteristics that is national, scientific and popular and is oriented toward the rest of the world and the future.

He called on cultural workers nationwide to lead the people to create advanced culture to meet the requirements of the developments of the time and history, to popularize advanced thought, culture and scientific concepts, and to promote the ethical and moral qualities and cultural standards of the whole nation.
