Floods Cause Heavy Losses in Central China Province

Five successive heavy storms have hit central China's Henan Province, and resulted in losses of 12 billion yuan (about US$1.5 billion) to the local economy.

According to the provincial department of civil affairs, floods have hit 15 major cities and prefectures in the past two months, affecting 22.75 million people, about one fourth of Henan's population.

The floods have besieged 1,368 villages, with 767,800 inhabitants, and inundated 1.46 million hectares of crops.

Local governments have taken measures to organize the people for flood-control work and to ensure them sufficient food and clothing, and medical treatment.

The provincial government has allocated emergency funds of 18 million yuan (about US$2.2 million) for the flood victims.
