Confucius to be Commemorated

Confucius' hometown, Qufu City in east China's Shandong Province, will hold a series of activities to commemorate the great thinker of ancient China, who lived from 551 B.C. to 479 B.C.

A government official of Qufu City said that the memorial activities will last from September 26 to October 10.

During the period, Confucius' descendants and representatives of all walks of life will gather in the Temple of Confucius to attend a grand memorial rite.

A seminar sponsored by scholars from the United States and Hong Kong will be held to exchange research findings in the study of Confucius' philosophy.

There will also be a variety of tourism programs in Qufu relating to Confucius.

Confucianism, which dominated China's political, cultural and social life for thousands of years, was based upon his teachings and had a far-reaching impact in Asia.

Last year, China held a grand gala to mark the 2,550th birthday of the sage in Beijing.
