KUNMING _ The global industrial giant Siemens plans to strengthen its presence in Southwest China, with the opening of its Kunming office.

The establishment of the new office yesterday demonstrates Siemens' long-term commitment to seek broad co-operative opportunities in promising Yunnan, said Ernst Behrens, president of Siemens Ltd China.

Liang Gongqing, vice-governor of Yunnan, praised the new office's opening as a key milestone in Yunnan's development undertakings.

As early as in 1910, Siemens provided generating units for Yunnan's Shilongba Hydropower Station, the first of its kind in China. During the past two decades, Siemens has become deeply involved in Yunnan's economic development in telecommunications, energy, medicine, tobacco and other sectors.
