G8 Seeks Early WTO Round

The following are the main points referring to economic matters to be included in a Group of Eight (G8) communique to be issued after a three-day world leaders' summit on Japan's southern island of Okinawa from July 2, according to Japanese financial daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

--Trade talks by the World Tra The newspaper said the communique will^ - Urge an early launch of a new round of global de Organisation (WTO). G8 host Japan is pushing for the statement to specify a goal of opening the new round by the end of this year, but that target faces opposition from developing nations and the final wording will be decided by the leaders.

-- Call on Japan to continue efforts to promote a full recovery of its economy led by private demand.

-- Make an agreement between Russia and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on economic reform a condition for rescheduling Moscow's debt.

-- Stress the importance of stable oil prices for the world economy.

-- Support efforts by international institutions to establish international rules on genetically modified foods.

-- Call for international promotion of research following the recent completion of a working map of the human genome.

-- Set up a working group on recyclable energy.
