Founder of Modern China Commemorated

China held a series of activities Sunday morning in Beijing, Guangzhou and Zhongshan, Guangdong Province, to mark the 134th birthday of Sun Yat-sen, forerunner of the democratic revolution in modern China.

Born in 1866 in Xiangshan County (now Zhongshan City), Guangdong Province, Dr. Sun has been known across the country as a "great revolutionary and a great statesman" who fought against imperialist aggression and for the independence and freedom of China. He died of illness in Beijing on March 12, 1925.

In Beijing, a commemorating ceremony was held in Zhongshan Memorial Hall in downtown area, attended by nine vice chairpersons of the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) as well as other senior leaders from the central and Beijing municipal governments.

In Zhongshan, where Dr. Sun Yat-sen was born, more than 200 people presented baskets of flowers in front of Dr. Sun's portrait.

In Guangzhou, where Dr. Sun spent much time fighting for China's democratic revolution, over 200 people gathered at the Zhongshan Memorial Hall to remember the great forerunner of the Chinese revolution.
