Shenzhen City, a stepping stone to Hong Kong, hosted more than 35.66 million overseas tourists in the first three quarters of the year.

The statistics represent a 13.7 percent rise from the same period last year, said local sources.

From January to September, some 8.58 million overseas tourists, most of whom were from China's Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao, visited Shenzhen, which celebrated its 20th anniversary of being a special economic zone in August, up 11.37 percent.

In the past nine months, the number of foreign nationals visiting Shenzhen was also increasing rapidly, according to local sources.

During the same period, the city earned US$907 million from overseas tourism services, up 10.34 percent, said the sources.
