Macao Airport Sees Booming Traffic in First Nine Months

Both passenger and cargo traffic at the Macao International Airport rose remarkably in the first nine months of this year, the latest figures from the airport show.

The airport handled more than 2.42 million passengers from January to September, an increase of 23 percent over the same period of 1999.

In September, the number of passengers exceeded 280,600, rising by 33 percent over the same month of last year.

Meanwhile, the airport handled 48,380 tons of cargo in the first three quarters, which represented 34-percent jump over that a year earlier.

In September only, cargo traffic soared by 72 percent to 6,649 tons over the same month last year.

Sources with the airport said the total number of passengers this year may top three millions for the first time since the airport was put into operation in late 1995.
