China Continues to Enlarge University Enrollment

China's colleges and universities will have over four million students by the year 2005, an increase of over two million from this year, an official with the Ministry of Education said Wednesday in Fuzhou, southeast China's Fujian Province.

Qu Zhenyuan, director of the ministry's student department, disclosed that China's colleges and universities will continue to enlarge enrollment during the 1996-2000 period.

China has accelerated college enrollment in the past years. China's colleges enrolled 2.04 million students this year, two times that of 1998.

However, this enlargement can hardly meet the country's need for high quality personnel, said Qu.

The Ministry of Education plans to enlarge annual college and university enrollment by one million during the 1996-2000 period.
